What is overkill?

What is overkill? Not overkill as in /cast Overkill, but rather: Boss hits you for X.

It’s how more ‘extra’ damage the boss (or you) did to its target on the killing blow. If you have 5,000 HP left and the boss hits you for 7,000, 2,000 points of that damage is overkill. It has no real bearing on the gameplay, it’s not a mechanic you need to do anything with or worry about, it’s just for boggling at and/or epeen stroking. Overkilling a Death Knight for some obscene number makes you feel all tingly inside, you know?
