The9 Brings 3rd Blizzard Suit
June 2, 2009 – 11:49 pmPosted by: sisilia
Shanghai-based online game company The9 (Nasdaq:NCTY) has sued Blizzard Entertainment, a division of Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq:ATVI), for software copyright infringement, reports Donews quoting the official Shanghai courts website. This is The9’s third lawsuit against Blizzard; The9 is also suing Blizzard Entertainment for assets damage and commercial defamation in two separate legal battles. The assets damage suit will be heard in the Shanghai Pudong District People’s Court on June 18, while hearings for the other two suits are scheduled for July 8 in the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court, according to the site.
NetEase (Nasdaq:NTES) has announced that it plans to enhance WoW’s translation, said the report. On the official WoW forum, an unnamed The9 engineer wrote that The9 has finished the game’s Chinese localization, including WoW’s “Wrath of the Lich King” expansion, and he believes The9 should possess copyrights, said the report. A legal industry insider said the copyright suit may be related to WoW’s translation, but these rights are usually clarified in contracts. The9 and Blizzard Entertainment have not commented on the news, said the report.
NetEase (Nasdaq:NTES) will own operation rights to the game and its second expansion, “Wrath of the Lich King,” after The9’s license expires in June.
